New Jersey shored up its reputation as one of the country's highest-taxed states in 2018.

Rates on high-income earners, businesses and motorists went up, and once again the state posted sky-high property tax bills.

Some rates, though, such as the estate and sales taxes, declined.

Gov. Phil Murphy entered office promising to raise rates on millionaires and roll back a fractional sales tax cut under his predecessor, Chris Christie.

In the end, wrangling between the governor and the Democrat-led Legislature resulted in higher rates on the richest earners and businesses with incomes over $1 million.

The state's gas tax also climbed by more than 10 percent, or 4.3 cents per gallon.

Property tax data out this year for 2017 showed rates climbed 1.64 percent to nearly $8,700.
