An Elmwood Park railroad crossing has been the site of numerous motor vehicle accidents. The New Jersey Department of Transportation hopes safety improvements starting this month will reverse the dangerous situation there.
In 2009, a 65-year-old Saddle brook woman was stuck on the tracks when the gates went down. She did get out safely, but the outcome was not the same last month on the Metro-North which saw the deadliest accident in history.
Last month, an SUV was struck while sitting on the rail crossing in Valhalla, New York, killing the driver, five others on the train and injuring dozens more. A response has been made to improve rail crossing safety around the country, and also here in New Jersey by using modern technology and raising public awareness.
