The FAA announced today a plan to help streamline the process used for rerouting planes.

Airline officials at Newark Liberty International Airport say air traffic controllers and pilots have communicated by radio for decades. But they say quite often by the time new flight plans were communicated and approved by pilots the new route would end up being closed so the process would have to be repeated.

Now, the FAA unveiled that it's going nationwide with NextGEN Data Comm, which is a text-based system already in a trial run at Newark. FAA officials say pilots get directions sent automatically with just a few clicks. They say it works like a GPS used in cars.

The system is only in use so far at two American airports. The plan is to bring three more airports online by the end of this year.
