A new American Legion post opening in Hoboken will include housing for homeless veterans.
American Legion Post 107 officially opened Monday. The new location features six apartments for homeless veterans.
“These brave men and women need our help now,” says Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla.
There are currently more than 20 veterans in Hoboken living without a home, according to the American Legion. They are among the 40,000 estimated homeless veterans across the country.
“We should be taking care of our veterans,” says Post 107 Commander John Carey. “As I said earlier, you can’t use the word ‘homeless’ with a veteran.”
Post 107 was originally destroyed by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. When members decided to build a new post, they made sure it included the housing. Members say that they are planning on building housing for 18 more homeless veterans.
The six current apartments still need to be furnished. The first veterans are expected to move in this August.
The building cost $3 million and was funded by donations and government support.
