A natural gas main break in Metuchen caused evacuations Tuesday morning.
Middlesex County workers apparently broke through a 12-inch gas main between Amboy Avenue and Main Street. Many streets were closed down and people were moved to safety after the break. Traffic was also diverted away from the area.
Several gas valves were turned off in the area. Fire crews from Metuchen and neighboring towns are ready in case the main ruptures. However, firefighters say the situation is under control.
