A Nassau County woman says even after being fully vaccinated against COVID-19, she still got sick from the virus.

Melanie Rosen, of Valley Stream, says about a month after getting her second dose of the Moderna vaccine, she started feeling ill and tested positive for COVID-19.

Rosen says her symptoms were mild though, as she dealt with a stuffy nose and leg discomfort. She's not exactly sure how she got it, but she says she did attend a wake with a big group of people there.

Rosen is issuing a warning to people to know that it's still possible to get the virus, even after being vaccinated.

"The great thing about the shot was I wasn't in agony, I didn't lose my sense of taste or smell, and I wasn't put into a hospital and I didn't pass, and that's the good thing about the shot," says Rosen. "But the thing is with the holidays, Passover, Easter, Spring Break, parents have to be careful, people have to be careful."

A Stony Brook University Hospital doctor underscored that it's definitely still possible to get COVID-19 after being vaccinated, but it's likely your symptoms will be less severe after being vaccinated.

"Among those who have been vaccinated, we hear an occasional case report of somebody who is in fact sick," says Dr. Sharon Nachman. "That tells us the vaccines are quite effective."

Nachman added that having the vaccine is also not a free ticket to putting away your masks for now.

"The more people we get vaccinated, the more we'll be able to relax that idea of you need a mask or you need to socially distance," says Nachman. "We need to get more people vaccinated to get to that point."

Rosen says she feels better and tested negative for COVID-19 Wednesday.
