At least four dogs have died and some are missing after a fire tore through One Step Closer Animal Rescue in Andover Wednesday afternoon.
The rescue, also known as OSCAR, posted about the fire on Facebook asking for help evacuating the dogs and providing shelter for the animals as fire crews arrived. The rescue is located near the Andover/Hopatcong border in Sussex County.
According to a statement from Hopatcong Police Chief Meghan McCluskey, police officers, Hopatcong firefighters and EMTs as well as mutual aid from surrounding towns were called to the scene around 3:38 p.m. for reports of an active structure fire.
"OSCAR is an active animal rescue facility housing approximately 40 dogs. The fire originated in the kennel area where the animals were kept," McCluskey said.
Most of the dogs were safely evacuated and picked up by Happy Tails rescue in Hackettstown as well as Hudson Happy Farm. Some of the dogs, however, are still unaccounted for. Rescue workers believe the dogs may have run off into the adjacent wooded area during the fire. OSCAR is advising people who spot the dogs to avoid chasing them, and to contact their local police department.
"In an effort to save the animals, they were released from their kennels prior to the fire spreading," the police chief said, adding that at least one dog was transported to Newton Animal Hospital for burn injuries.
In an updated Facebook post Wednesday night, the rescue expressed thanks for the community members who reached out to offer support, saying monetary donations are the best way to help.
"Our hearts are broken. As many of you have heard, our rescue recently suffered a devastating fire. While we are beyond grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love and offers of donated supplies, we are facing a difficult reality that we currently have no facility space to store physical donations," the rescue posted. "Right now, our most urgent need is monetary support to help us rebuild, relocate, and continue caring for the animals who depend on us."
OSCAR says the funds will be used to pay for temporary and permanent housing, rebuilding the facility and paying for medical expenses and care for the dogs that were affected. A GoFundMe page to assist the rescue has been set up and has already raised more than $97,000.
Police say the fire is still under investigation by local authorities and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.
