A glimpse of future air travel? Hybrid-electric aircraft makes stops in NJ

A hybrid-electric aircraft made stops in Millville and Atlantic City this month during a test of how smaller airports could someday connect travelers more directly with major airline hubs.
The demonstration flights traveled between Manassas, Virginia, and Philadelphia, stopping at Millville Executive Airport and Atlantic City’s Bader Field before continuing to Northeast Philadelphia Airport and Philadelphia International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The idea behind the test is to determine whether next-generation aircraft capable of operating from smaller airports could eventually provide more direct connections between communities and larger transportation hubs.
For New Jersey, the flights also marked a first. The state Department of Transportation (NJDOT) hosted New Jersey’s first Advanced Air Mobility demonstration Aug. 13 at Bader Field, showcasing how electric and hybrid-electric aircraft could operate within the existing transportation system.
“This is a glimpse of the future,” NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain said. “This enables Direct Aviation: connecting people more directly to where they want to go, rather than requiring a long drive to a major airport.”
The aircraft was operated by Electra, which conducted the demonstration flights with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in partnership with NJDOT.
The demonstration does not mean commercial passenger service is coming to Millville or Bader Field. Instead, the flights are part of a federal testing program gathering real-world information about how next-generation aircraft could eventually operate alongside existing air traffic.
The tests are part of the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, an initiative aimed at safely integrating advanced aircraft into the National Airspace System. The U.S. Department of Transportation selected eight projects across 26 states for the program in March.
The FAA said it will use information gathered from the demonstrations to identify gaps, improve procedures and support the safe integration of the aircraft into the nation’s airspace.
Additional test flights are planned throughout the rest of the year.
