The MTA says it’s getting closer to phasing out MetroCards as the OMNY tap-and-go technology has now reached almost all riders in the city, including reduced-fare riders like seniors.
The transit agency reports that OMNY has now logged more than 2 billion taps.
"New Yorkers love OMNY. They love how it makes paying the fares so easy, they love how OMNY makes sure you get the best bang for the buck. You don't have to pick, am I going to pay $100-plus for a monthly, am I going to pay $30-plus for a weekly. Just tap and go, and the system will give you the best deal," says MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber.
