A local church in Morristown teamed up with an Exxon gas station Sunday to offer drivers a chance to fill up for 99 cents a gallon.
"We're going to try to serve in a practical way and with gas prices spiking, what's a better way to serve people?" asked Tim Lucas, the lead pastor of Liquid Church in Morristown.
The church, a contemporary Christian congregation, shelled out nearly $15,000 to give drivers a break. Many drivers suspected there was a catch to the largesse. Lucas says there is none.
"We have no agenda - not trying to convert people. Not trying to make a political statement," he says. "We literally are trying to say whether you drive a beat up Honda or a showroom Hummer - God loves you."
Cash-strapped drivers waited as long as an hour and a half to receive the gas, but say it was time well spent.
