More than 300K without power following major snowstorm
A second major snowstorm in less than a week has left hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans without power.
The state's major utility companies reported more than 300,000 customers without power by Wednesday night.
As of 8:30 p.m. Jersey Central Power and Light was reporting over 151,000 customers without power, while PSEG was reporting over 135,000 customers without power. Atlantic City Electric reported over 20,000 without power, while Sussex Rural Electric reported about 141 customers out.
Some of the JCP&L customers have been without power since last Friday’s powerful nor’easter.
Wednesday’s storm produced nearly 2 feet of snow in some parts of the state. The heavy, wet snow caused trees and utility poles to fall all across the state.
Residents are being reminded to stay away from any downed wires because there could be a chance that they are energized. Fallen utility poles should be reported to the proper authorities.
Any resident using a gas-powered generator in the wake of a power outage should also use the proper precautions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Spokespersons for the utility companies say that it could take several days to restore power to all residents.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
