This week is starting off with more delays and cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport brought on by an air traffic controller shortage and technology issues. Low ceiling conditions this morning are also causing delays.
Most of the delays are on United. The airline is also cutting 35 flights daily out of Newark due to an air traffic controller shortage.
United says that 20% of the air traffic controllers serving Newark walked off the job last week, limiting an already-reduced workforce.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says flying is still safe but the technology is outdated.
Duffy expected to announce a plan this week to build an all-new air traffic control system.
He also says the FAA is now offering incentives to retain existing staff and will hire at least 2,000 controllers this year at a 30% higher starting salary.
"They have the most critical job for our safety, and so if they are understaffed and the people that are covering are going to be overtired because they are doing longer shifts as a flyer," said one traveler. "That's making me feel very nervous."
Ongoing runway construction and outdated technology have also been cited for the delays.
