A KFF poll finds about one in eight adults have taken GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic.

These drugs continue to gain popularity for those who want to kick-start their weight-loss journey. They help shed pounds fast - but what happens when you’re ready to stop using it.

“The first thing is understanding that when you stop the medications, the hunger is going to come back and you need a plan for that.”

James O. Hill, PHD is a professor of nutrition sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and co-author of “Losing The Weight Loss Meds: A 10-week playbook for stopping GLP-1 medications without regaining the weight.” He says the key is to make a plan to keep the weight-off.

“What we talk about is ways to eat to increase your satiety. Protein, fiber. People get so little fiber. Fiber is good for satiety, says Dr. Hill. “Food noise will come back but if you have a plan, your appetite won't increase like it was before.”

Portioning food and not eating more than you need can be tough, especially during the holiday season. However, Dr. Hill says simple swaps can help with that.

He recommends making cocktails a little lighter and going for smaller desserts that are less calories. Dr. Hill says it’s also important to get moving.
