Montville middle school deemed safe following social media threat

A social media threat was made to Lazar Middle School in Montville on Friday morning, according to officials.
Students have since proceeded on with a normal day of school. There was a heavy local, county and state police presence at the school earlier.
Thomas Gorman, the superintendent of Montville Township Public Schools, sent an email to parents around 8:30 a.m. stating a threat was made regarding the middle school through social media. He says law enforcement quickly identified the threat and secured the building.
“Many measures are in place to ensure the safety of the students and staff. The faculty and staff were outstanding in handling this situation,” Gorman said in a statement.
Gorman says bags were checked one by one as students arrived and walked inside. Following the search, Gorman says students were gathered in the gymnasium and cafeteria as they normally do before the start of school. He says once all the students had entered the building safely, they then proceeded to homeroom before beginning the regular school day activities.
School officials said the police department does not believe the threat is credible, though an investigation remains underway. Counselors and staff were on hand for any students that may seek assistance.
