The atmosphere is inebriated with moisture. The storms this evening are moving at a snail's pace. When it rains, it is going to dump. We haven't had a weather day yet this summer where model guidance is calling for the possibility of 1 to 3 inches of rain, let alone some storms producing 4, 5 and 6 inches of rain. And that is the scenario tonight.
This type of rain will obviously lead to flooding of our streets, but it could also lead to small streams spilling over their banks and water levels rising. Basements could see some water inundation. Some storms could lay down 1 to 3 inches of rain an hour. With that type of intensity, water will just flow very quickly around storm basins and into the middle of roads.
Use an abundance of caution later tonight. Do not drive through roads that are filled or covered with water. And give a lot of extra space between you and other drivers if you have to be on the roads tonight.
The forecast remains tropical this week. Moments of sun and clouds, hot and humid and isolated, scattered storms will rear up during the afternoon hours. Don't cancel outdoor plans. Just have a plan for when or if a thunderstorm moves into your neighborhood.
The temperatures will be hovering just above the 90-degree mark this week. It will feel warmer. It is July in New Jersey, so nothing unusual. By Friday, we will likely have had our fourth heatwave of the summer. Don't worry, winter lovers. December is only five months away.
