A lawyer sought in the shooting death of his girlfriend inside their Essex County home last month has been captured in Cuba.
James Ray III was flown back to the United States on Tuesday. He's being held in the Essex County Jail.
The 55-year-old Montclair man faces murder and weapons charges in the death of 44-year-old Angela Bledsoe. She was found Oct. 23 inside the home where they lived with their young child.
Authorities say police making a wellness check found Bledsoe suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ray wasn't at the home when police arrived. Authorities said Wednesday he initially went to Mexico after the shooting and then flew to Cuba, where he was detained upon arrival.
“The defendant was apprehended in Cuba before he could go through customs. Working with our federal and international law enforcement partners, we were able to identify him as our suspect and arrange to have him returned to New Jersey,” Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens said in a statement.
Stephens says that this case was unique because it took the combined effort of local, county, state, national and international law enforcement personnel to capture Ray.
Ray is expected to make his first court appearance Nov. 13 to determine if he will be detained.
Ray and Bledsoe’s child was not injured during the crime. Officials previously said that the child is now in the care of relatives.
