Mom writes children's book about son's disability
A 3-year-old boy who had both his legs amputated became an Internet sensation last year when a video of him surfaced walking with prosthetic legs. The video has nearly a million views on YouTube and was shared all over the world. Now his mother has written a children's book about his journey.
Kayden Kinckle was prematurely born with a rare disease that caused his intestines to grow outside his body. In January 2014, further complications caused Kayden to lose his right leg and left foot.
Kayden is now able to walk without a walker, but must constantly get new prosthetics as he grows.
While Kayden continues his progress, his mother Nikki is taking steps to make sure her son's story can move others. Kayden's father Kevin Kinckle says Nikki got to working on the book right away.
"As soon as we found out Kayden was going to have some of the issues he had, she was writing stuff down. She had the book. It was planned out," he says.
Kayden's mom hopes her son's story can become a learning tool and wants to make it available to Bergen County Public Schools, as well as the Englewood Library.
"I don't want him to be teased or bullied and I want, when he walks in a room, everyone to just say hi to him like they would say hi to any other child," says Nikki Kinckle
The book is on a limited run but is available through the family's foundation.
