The Passaic Valley Water Commission has issued an immediate, precautionary boil water advisory for approximately 5,000 customers in Clifton and 200 customers in Passaic.

The advisory follows emergency repairs on a 51-inch water transmission main on Chittenden Road in Clifton, which connects to an intersecting 42-inch main. Officials said the advisory will remain in place until water pressure is fully restored and laboratory testing confirms the water is safe to drink.

According to PVWC, the repair work on the 51-inch main creates a high potential for water pressure fluctuations. While officials emphasized there is currently no evidence of contamination, sudden pressure drops in a water distribution system can increase the risk of outside contaminants entering the pipeline. The advisory was triggered as a precaution in accordance with New Jersey state drinking water regulations.

Customers in the affected service areas must bring all tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, then allow it to cool completely before use. Alternatively, residents are urged to use bottled water.

Boiled or bottled water must be used for:

  • Drinking and cooking

  • Making ice and brushing teeth

  • Washing dishes, fruits and vegetables

  • Preparing infant formula

PVWC crews are working around the clock to complete the infrastructure repairs and stabilize the system. Once repairs are finalized, crews will collect water samples across the affected areas for laboratory testing.

Residents will be notified immediately through official channels when the advisory is lifted.
