Some students in Neptune Township will be forced to remain in trailers for classes after mold was found at a construction site.
Students at Midtown Community Elementary School have been attending classes in trailers for nearly two years while a new school is under construction. School officials say the students will now remain in the trailers another year while the mold at the construction site is removed.
Construction crews found the mold between insulation and the brick façade in the entire main building facing Route 33. They reported the mold in mid-January. It has since been determined the mold is so bad, the brick walls must come down and be rebuilt.
The new school is a $60 million state construction project. School officials say it will cost $5 million to $10 million to rebuild. A spokesperson for the New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation (SCC), which is overseeing the project, says the SCC will cover extra cost and seek repayment later. He adds, ?We have brought in independent consultants to investigate and find what party is responsible.?
Meanwhile, the school superintendent is considering moving some students to other schools within the district for the upcoming year. He has also asked faculty members to come up with a list of things to make the trailers more comfortable for students.
