Firefighters battled flames early Monday morning after a car crashed into a multifamily home and caught fire, officials said.
According to police, Timothy Ryan was driving westbound on the Northern State Parkway near Exit 42N when he lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and struck a home on Deforest Road North. Authorities said it is unclear what caused the driver to lose control.
A resident told News 12 the car traveled through a wooded area before crashing into the house. The vehicle then burst into flames, igniting part of the structure.
Residents inside the home were not injured. The people living there told News 12 they were able to pull the driver out of the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames.
A spokesperson for the Dix Hills Fire Department said the home sustained extensive damage.
The driver, who is from Smithtown, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, neighbors said drivers frequently speed along the exit ramp from the Northern State Parkway.
Police said the driver is not facing any charges.
