The school’s superintendent
said the past two weeks have been extremely difficult for the school
community. The hazing incident reportedly involved older
players from the high school's football team pinning down a younger player and
using what looked like a broom in a video.
One of the football players
involved in the hazing allegations was also recently arrested in connection to
a separate sexual assault allegation off
school grounds.
The school district said in a
letter to parents that it's partnering up with the county to have counselors
available to students.
The letter said, “District
counselors have been providing support services for our students and will
continue to do so. It is not unusual for adolescents to feel anxious, sad,
fearful, angry or vulnerable as a result of traumatic events. This is
compounded by the fact that so many rumors are circulating online and in the
media.”
On the district website, the
superintendent said, in part, “I am aware of many social media posts and media
reports that are grounded in rumor. This circulation of misinformation is
compounding an already difficult and challenging situation. Contributing to
this type of messaging is hurtful to the students, school community, and to the
greater Wall Township community.”
The Wall Board of Education is
having its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night, and it announced Saturday
that it'll be taking place at the high school auditorium, which means they're
probably expecting a higher than usual attendance.
The superintendent's office
hasn't returned News 12’s request for comment.
