New Jersey families who lost loved ones in the Sept. 11 attacks are dismayed by news that a memorial at Ground Zero is being threatened by cost overruns.
The opening of the memorial was scheduled to coincide with the attack?s 10th year anniversary in 2011.
On Monday, officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are expected to announce a delay in the construction of the 9/11 memorial.
The news has hit a sour note with families on both sides of the river who see the memorial as the cemetery of their loved ones.
Plans for a memorial have been mired in problems for years. But New Jersey residents say the delays are unacceptable.
"Ten years is coming up and I probably would like to go see the memorial,? says Melanie Toran, of Bayonne. ?I didn't have anybody who died in there, but I was outside when I saw everything. You know, they should get it together."
The pain of not having a memorial is compounded for New Jersey families. The Empty Sky memorial at Liberty State Park was supposed to open in 2005. Three years later, it is still a fenced-off grassy knoll.
Many believe money should not deter two memorials that could bring loved ones a sense of closure.
