A 33-year-old Howell Township man drowned Saturday morning while trying to swim in Crystal Lake.

Police say Edwin Toro-Mejia unlawfully visited the Heritage Mineral property in Manchester and tried to swim with other individuals at around 9:30 a.m.

As he attempted to cross the lake, Toro-Mejia experienced a muscle cramp in his leg.

Authorities say he was around 30 yards away from the shoreline at the time. His family members unsuccessfully tried to save him.

The Manchester Township Police Department is reminding the public that the site is private property and urges people to obey the no trespassing signs.
