The man charged in the fatal shooting of New Jersey college student Brendan Tevlin pleaded not guilty in Essex County Court Tuesday.

Ali Muhammad Brown faces murder and terrorism charges for the 2014 death. He is the first person charged in New Jersey with terrorism connected to a murder, according to prosecutors.

Brown, who is of the Muslim faith, allegedly told police that he killed the 19-year-old Tevlin, as well as three other people in Seattle, as part of a crusade to punish the United States government for its foreign policies toward Islamic states.

Tevlin was shot and killed at the intersection of Walker Road and Northfield Avenue in West Orange in June 2014 while sitting in his car at a traffic light.
