Man pleads guilty to fatally shooting Valley Stream man outside Queens funeral

Police say Joseph Gilbert Stevens, of The Bronx, shot 49-year-old Richard Carter while a funeral was taking place on April 10.

A man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter for fatally shooting a Valley Stream resident outside a church in Queens.

Police say Joseph Gilbert Stevens, of The Bronx, shot 49-year-old Richard Carter while a funeral was taking place on April 10.

Multiple bullets struck Carter in the torso near the intersection of Merrick Boulevard and Sayres Avenue.

He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Stevens was arrested the following day.

He faces 24 years in prison when sentenced next month.

He is also expected to face five years of post-release supervision.
