Authorities say a man in a mental health crisis assaulted two officers in Verona last week with a screwdriver.
They say a parent called cops worried about the well-being of her adult son. Authorities say the man got violent at a home on Linn Drive when they suggested he visit the hospital.
The man pulled out a screwdriver-type tool from his pocket and assaulted two officers, according to police. They say one officer was cut in the chest – breaking the skin above the protective vest. Another officer was cut above his eye. Both officers are expected to be OK.
The man was restrained and handcuffed. Authorities say he then began kicking officers until his legs were secured.
The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He faces criminal charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Police say the Essex County Mobile Crisis Unit was contacted before the incident escalated, but they were unable to respond for several hours.
