A Maplewood man is in prison after being accused in two drunken driving crashes in Newark.
Police say Hakeem Gayle crashed his car through the front of a restaurant on Elm Road in the Ironbound section of Newark on Saturday morning around 9:30 a.m.
Officials say the restaurant owner tried to take pictures of the scene, but the suspect grabbed his cellphone and tried to run away.
Witnesses and some firefighters caught and held Gayle until police arrived.
The restaurant was open at the time, but no one was hurt.
Police say before he crashed into the restaurant, Gayle was involved in another crash at a nearby intersection and left before police showed up.
Gayle and his passenger Juan Fonrose, of East Orange, both face multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated and contempt.
