Mothers Against Drunk Driving met with members of the New Jersey State Police Wednesday and thanked them for their role in the prevention of drunken driving.
Members of MADD met with officers inside State Police Troop B Headquarters in Totowa. Troopers were given a firsthand account of Steve Benvenisti's brush with death 20 years ago.
Benvenisti, now a Bergen County attorney, nearly lost his life after being hit by a drunken driver while attending the College of New Jersey in Ewing. He says he'll spend the rest of his life thanking police officers.
"Thank you not just on behalf of myself, but on behalf of every single person whose life you've saved, whose life you've touched but never had the chance to thank you personally," Benvenisti told officers.
MADD NJ Executive Director Mindy Lazar joined Benvenisti to remind the troopers the importance of their work in spotting drunken drivers throughout the coming weekend.
"Unlike a disease where they're looking for a cure, we do know the cure for this and that is the prevention of drunk driving," she said.
