Lawmakers propose bill that would provide relief at gas pump

As gas prices continue to rise, many New Jersey residents are looking for some relief at the pump.

The average cost of gas in New Jersey is $4.51 for a gallon of regular, which is up 51 cents from last month.

Republican lawmakers Anthony Bucco and Carmen Amato Jr. are proposing a bill that would provide permanent relief at the pump for New Jersey drivers.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill is against it.

During News 12’s "Ask Gov Sherril" segment, she explained that the gas tax is essential for helping pay for roads, bridges and keeping infrastructure going.

New Jersey has one of the highest gas taxes in the nation, which is about 50 cents a gallon.
