Lawmakers are trying to curb skyrocketing catalytic converter thefts with a new bill.
Thieves are stealing catalytic converters at alarming rates because they can get big money for the metal inside.
At a hearing Thursday, lawmakers considered a bill requiring anyone selling a car to etch the vehicle identification number onto the catalytic converter.
"The thieves have to diligently work on trying to remove these VIN numbers from these given parts, and it's very cumbersome to do so," said Milton Rodriguez, with VIN-MARK Security Systems.
The bill would also offer car insurance discounts for getting your VIN etched onto a catalytic converter.
