Four youngsters rescued from the dangerous surf at Bradley Beach this week paid tribute to their lifesavers Wednesday.
In their emotional reunion, the kids said they felt lucky to be alive.
"I was scared for my life," said 16-year-old Kalie Oquendo. "My life flashed before my eyes. I didn't know what I was going to do."
Oquendo was pulled along after she and three of her relatives were swept in. Another person was dragged in within a half hour. Lifeguards clearing equipment off the beach were able to act quickly and pull everyone out safely in both incidents.
Thomas Rant, who's been a lifeguard for nine years, says events like Tuesday's give the job meaning.
"It kind of touches me a little bit," he said. "I just feel really happy about what we do and how we do it."
