A superior court judge has ordered the borough of Helmetta to release dozens of documents related to the borough's animal shelter.
A Kane in Your Corner investigation exposed poor conditions at the shelter last year. The NJSPCA ordered the shelter be shut down, and it was taken over by the state.
The superior court judge found that Helmetta violated New Jersey's Open Public Records Act when they withheld documents requested by animal rights activists Collene and Steve Wronko.
The Wronkos are asking for animal intake records, certification of Animal Control Officers, and the shelter's floor plan.
Animal cruelty charges are pending against the shelter's director and her husband. The borough is currently working on a plan to reopen the shelter under a new director.
