The government pumps millions of taxpayer dollars into projects to keep the beaches sandy and fresh so hundreds of thousands of people can flock to the Jersey Shore.
Congress is about to shell out hundreds of millions more to improve New Jersey beaches. A plan to improve the sand from Union Beach to Highlands will cost at least $115 million over the next five decades.
Better beaches from Manasquan to Barnegat Light will cost $120 million. Other multi-million dollar projects are in the works.
Summer visitors to the shore pump about $2 billion into the state's economy and some New Jersey residents say that with all their other taxes they don?t want to pay for something that keeps washing away. They say the money from taxpayers should be used for other things like health care and insurance.
