Is Jersey City the hippest city in the Garden State?
Jersey City is certainly one of the biggest towns on the rise in the Garden State - and the city’s mayor says that it’s no surprise.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop held his state of the city address Wednesday and told residents about all the exciting things the future of the city has in store.
Crime in the city is down and Fulop says that the city is planning to create its own citywide bus system. There is also the Bayfront Project. At 100 acres of land for $100 million, it is set to be the largest investment the city has ever made.
Fulop says that it will be, “one of the biggest mixed-income communities in the region, which will include market rate, senior living and moderate-income housing.”
The mayor also highlights the fact that there have been no tax abatements in two years. And he says that schools in the city will be lead-free by January 2020 thanks to remediation.
“The MUA in the next two months will start installing a lead filtration system in certain targeted schools in Jersey City,” Fulop says.
And Fulop says what is most important is that Jersey City has become a destination city for many – with many New Yorkers coming across the Hudson River to check out Jersey City nightlife.
Jersey City residents, for the most part, welcome the New Yorkers. They say that it brings in more money and that these people can feel the diversity of Jersey City firsthand.
“When you go to Journal Square there are nice Indian restaurants. When you go to Newport there’s nice Asian restaurants...It’s so diverse,’ says Jersey City resident Josue Sejoui.
The mayor has called Jersey City, with its population of 270,000 residents, the most diverse city in the United States.
