An ICE agent was injured and fired shots during an attempted arrest that turned violent Monday morning in Ocean County.
Authorities say the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. along Route 72 near Mermaid Drive in Manahawkin.
Officials say agents were attempting to apprehend a suspect connected to a warrant when the situation escalated.
Investigators say the suspect drove off in a vehicle, striking the ICE agent as he tried to stop them.
The agent then fired several rounds, hitting the rear window of the fleeing vehicle.
Evidence markers and what appear to be shell casings were seen in the roadway at the scene.
The agent was taken to the hospital, but officials have not released details about the extent of his injuries.
It is still unclear whether the suspect or anyone inside the vehicle was hit by the gunfire.
Authorities say the suspect was last seen heading east on Route 72 toward the Garden State Parkway.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office confirms the FBI has now taken over the investigation.
Route 72 remains closed in the area near Mermaid Drive as authorities continue to secure the scene and search for the suspect.
Police say there is no threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing.
