Authorities say five people, including a teenager, were held against their will for almost five hours inside an apartment in Newark.
Officers responded to building number 214 at the Pennington Court housing complex on South Street just before 2 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities say all of the hostages are safe and doing OK.
Police say 32-year-old Yucef Shabazz Rogers, of Newark, came into his girlfriend's apartment. She was with two other woman, a man and a 14-year-old.
Officials say Rogers fired an AK-47 once but did not hit anyone.
A neighbor says that Rogers had pummeled the teenager.
Rogers is set to face a long list of charges.
This is the second hostage situation that was resolved in Newark in two days. On Friday, two men were rescued from a rooftop after they were held by an armed homeless man.
