A Code Red is in effect for Newark, meaning residents should take precautions to prevent extreme heat illness -- especially seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions.
There are several emergency shelters operating during the extreme hot weather.
Homeless Services is providing outreach to the homeless focusing on areas such as Penn Station, city parks, areas under bridges and areas off McCarter Highway.
