(08/07/07) KEARNY ? The job of a firefighter is difficult as it is, but throw in temperatures of more than 90 degrees, and things get even more dangerous.
Firefighters in Kearny say they take extra precautions when the mercury spikes. Dep. Chief Anthony Calabrese says rotating personnel is key to make sure everyone stays fresh and has a chance to rest.
?With our turn out gear and the amount of perspiration you sweat, it?s like an oven and you really have to be on top of your men,? Calabrese says.
In addition to rotation and rest, firefighters say it?s all about hydration, hydration and hydration.
No matter what steps are taken, it isn?t easy battling hot flames in 90 degree heat while hauling around 75 lbs. of equipment.
?When it?s 85 or 90 degree heat, 90 percent humidity, it?s tough to cool down,? says firefighter Rich Lowinger.
