A 23-year-old man died Monday morning after falling from an unmarked trail at Sleeping Giant State Park on Mount Carmel Avenue, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

DEEP has not identified the man, but says when he was found in the woods he had already succumbed to his injuries.

Crews from the Hamden Police Dept., Hamden Fire Dept. and EMS from American Medical Response assisted in the emergency response.

The death is being investigated by DEEP Environmental Conservation Police, the state’s Attorney’s Office in New Haven and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

DEEP officials say the hiker’s death was likely an accident.

Quinnipiac University is located adjacent to the state park.

A spokesperson tells News 12 there is no Quinnipiac connection to the incident that they are aware of.
