Breaking into the filmmaking industry is not easy.

To help kids get a leg up, Project Sunshine Inc., founded by Holly Spain, will offer a free filmmaking program for youth ages 9 to 17.

"If you work with young people, you know that nowadays they're, I mean, these kids are exceptionally bright and a lot of them can teach us a thing or two, so they're more mature," Spain said.

It will start on May 5 at the Bridgeport Public Library North Branch and continue every Tuesday until August 18.

The program is a first-of-its-kind for Project Sunshine Inc. To show their support, the Fairfield County Community Foundation donated $5,000 toward the program.

"At the end of the program, each young person is going to have an eight- to 10-minute short movie. We are going to do a red carpet event where we're going to show their movie to their loved ones and hopefully be able to submit it to film festivals because it's important," Spain said.

There is limited space in the program, and Spain said due to its intensity, anyone who is interested is required to submit an application.
