Heartsaver class: News 12 learns to perform lifesaving techniques

News 12 staffers got a lesson from the Perth Amboy Fire Department on how to perform CPR and other lifesaving techniques from a heartsaver class.

Some of the News 12 New Jersey morning staff received a lesson from an American Heart Association Heartsaver class on how to perform life-saving techniques from Fire Chief Edward Mullen and Fire Capt. Danny Arroyo of the Perth Amboy Fire Department.

Heartsaver CPR AED adult reminder:

-Tap and shout.
-Shout for help. Send someone to phone 911 and get an AED.
-Look for no breathing or only gasping.
-Push hard and fast. Give 30 compressions. Compress at least two inches deep. Give 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Let the chest come back up to its normal position. Try not to interrupt compressions for more than a few seconds.
-Open the airway and give two breaths.
-Repeat sets of 30 compressions and two breaths.
-When the AED arrives, turn it on and follow the prompts.
