New Jersey health officials have confirmed a case of measles at a Nutley elementary school.

Nutley Public Schools officials sent a letter to parents explaining that they were tracking a case of measles at Washington Elementary School. Some students could have been exposed on Sept. 27

Officials said that the school was cleaned and sanitized and that there is no current risk to students.

The New Jersey Department of Health says that this is the first case of confirmed measles in New Jersey since mid-July.

“As of Oct. 3, 2019, there are 19 confirmed cases of measles in New Jersey. Twelve of these cases are associated with the 2019 Measles Outbreak, Ocean County, which was considered over as of May 16,” said a spokesperson for the department.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that there have been more than 1,200 cases of measles this year in the United States – the highest since 1992. There have been 22 separate outbreaks in 17 states, according to the CDC.

But Health and Human Services says that despite the number of cases, the United States did not lose its measles elimination status.
