A new platform section opened Wednesday at the Harrison PATH station.

Commuters boarding the train to Jersey City or New York will now need to make a left onto the platform's east end; the area to the right will now be closed for construction.

The same thing will happen on the westbound side next month.

The new station is being built alongside a broader redevelopment plan for Harrison, as an effort to make it more of a popular bedroom community for New York, similar to Hoboken and Jersey City.

The $256 million project will feature new enclosed entrances, elevators, widened stairs and escalator access to both platforms. The extended platforms will accommodate longer, 10-car trains on the Newark-WTC line.

The Port Authority says this new station project will create more than 1,000 jobs and is expected to spur about $344 million in economic activity.
