Paddle boating has been shut down at Colonia Park in Franklin Township due to a harmful algal bloom in Powder Mill Pond.
The excessive algae growth can cause irritation or even flu-like symptoms if it comes into contact with a person’s skin.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection says that swallowing the water could cause health issues such as liver toxicity and brain issues.
Experts say children and pets are more vulnerable to getting seriously ill from ingesting the water.
More information about the shutdown can be found on the Somerset County Park Commission webpage.
