Hackensack is considering a nearly $151,000 lightning-warning and weather-monitoring system for city parks and school athletic fields.
A resolution scheduled for consideration by the City Council on Tuesday would authorize a contract of up to $150,900 with Dallas-based Perry Weather Inc. for an outdoor warning system and 10 weather stations.
The proposed purchase includes equipment, installation and subscriptions. The city says it is working with the Hackensack Board of Education to provide warnings about nearby lightning and other severe weather at parks and school athletic fields used by residents and students.
Perry Weather provides weather-monitoring technology for schools, parks and other outdoor facilities. According to the company, its systems can monitor nearby lightning activity and issue automated alerts to help organizations make decisions about outdoor safety.
The city plans to purchase the equipment through a cooperative purchasing contract. Hackensack's purchasing agent recommended the agreement as the best available price, according to the resolution.
Hackensack has received a $63,825 grant from the Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund toward the project and has applied for another grant on behalf of the school district.
The resolution does not identify the proposed installation locations or specify when the equipment would be installed.
The contract remains subject to City Council approval. The council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
