The conditions of a Jersey City cemetery sparked the anger of grieving family members looking to bring Mother's Day flowers to deceased love ones.
Mourners, like Miriam Melendez, say they were appalled at the current state of the cemetery on Newark Avenue.
"I came here and I saw the grass all around her tombstone," she says. "You couldn't even see her name, you couldn't see her picture, so we started cutting it down."
Others took the matter into their own hands, like Gilberto Padilla who began chopping down grass.
"I'm ashamed," he says. "I want to cry, I want to take out my frustration ? but on who? On what?"
The cemetery dates back to 1829, and all of its caretakers have either died or moved away. The New Jersey Cemetery Board is trying to find another operator.
