Gov. Mikie Sherrill stopped by White Manna Hamburgers in Hackensack on Tuesday as part of her ongoing effort to connect with small business owners across New Jersey.
The iconic burger restaurant, which has served customers in Hackensack for more than 80 years, was the latest stop on Sherrill's 21-county small business tour, part of her "Saving You Time and Money" initiative.
"It's nice to kind of come back to something that was part of your growing up," said longtime customer Jessica Hong. "It's not a typical chain. Everything is super fresh."
Sherrill shared a meal at the popular eatery during her visit.
"It's pretty cool to see her here, but let's face it, the main reason is the burgers," joked customer Robert Block, of New Milford.
Since taking office, Sherrill has traveled throughout the state visiting small businesses to hear directly from owners about the challenges they face and opportunities for growth.
"There's so many franchises. It's the same everywhere," said Dorit Cohen, wife of one of the owners of White Manna. "We want to maintain all the old establishments, and we don't want them swallowed up."
The governor has also signed executive orders aimed at streamlining permitting and regulatory processes, an issue that carries particular significance for White Manna as it prepares to relocate for the first time since opening its doors.
The restaurant is expected to move just down the street in the coming months but will remain in Hackensack. For loyal customers, the news that the beloved burger spot isn't leaving town comes as a relief.
"The way things used to be," said Brian DeVincentis, of South Hackensack, describing the fare at White Manna. "Simple, basic food. Comfort food."
