Gov. Mikie Sherrill said she was finally allowed inside Delaney Hall but described the visit as a closely controlled tour.

“After being denied access for weeks, I was finally allowed into Delaney Hall – but what I received was a closely controlled and limited tour of the facility. That is unacceptable," said Sherrill in a statement.

Sherrill said she was not permitted to speak with detainees during the visit and is demanding greater transparency from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“I was not allowed to meet or speak directly with the detainees, which continues to raise serious questions about the real conditions of the facility and the treatment of those held there. I will continue to push to speak with the detainees directly. They deserve to be heard and the public deserves answers," said Sherrill.

The governor said she will continue pushing for health inspections at the facility, direct access to detainees and the closure of Delaney Hall.

“I will continue advocating for humane treatment at Delaney Hall for detainees and their families, and ultimately to close the facility for good,” she said.
