Health officials are reminding people to thoroughly wash fresh fruits and vegetables before eating them, as Cyclospora cases are being reported across the country, including in New Jersey.

The parasite can spread through produce exposed to contaminated water.

Experts recommend washing fresh produce under running water, trimming away any bruised or damaged areas and refrigerating cut fruits and vegetables within two hours to help reduce the risk of illness.

Anyone who develops symptoms, such as persistent diarrhea or nausea after eating fresh produce, should contact a doctor.
