The statewide total number of coronavirus cases in New Jersey now stands at 54,588 cases, after Gov. Phil Murphy announced 3,627 new cases this morning.
The governor also announced 233 additional deaths, bringing the statewide death toll to 1,932. As of Thursday, at 10:00 p.m., 7,570 residents were hospitalized. 1,679 of them were in critical intensive care, and 1,663 ventilators were in use.
Murphy is also signing an executive order to help balance the needs of public safety and public health. Under the order, certain-low risk individuals may be placed on temporary home confinement or granted parole if already eligible through an expedited process.
Certain low-risk individuals include people whose current age or health status puts them at particular risk for COVID-19, who had been denied parole within the last year, or whose sentences are to expire within the next three months. No one convicted of a serious crime, such as murder, or sexual assault, among others, will be eligible for consideration. No one who cannot meet the standards will be released.
